Do you wonder why people today are so negative
about themselves and life in general? I can tell you
that one reason is that our society programs us for
failure and mediocrity in many venues. Some of
these are put out as entertainment which allows the
negative items to slip past our conscious filters and go
directly into our subconscious.
To give you an example just look at the following
verse and see if you recognize it:
"All week long we’re some real nobodies
but we just punched out and it’s paycheck
Friday. The weekends here. Good God
Almighty. Let’s get drunk and be somebody."
If you listen to country music you may recognize this
as the chorus from Toby Keith’s new hit song. Now I
like to listen to country music and I heard this song a
lot recently on the country stations when I began to
realize how much it plants a negative impact
on a person’s life.
Now I like Toby’s music and appreciate him as an
artist. However I now listen to this song with a grain of
salt as to what it could mean if I internalized the lyrics.
To contemplate that as the chorus says I an a “real
nobody” who only looks forward to “paycheck Friday”
and then go out where “I get drunk and am
somebody” puts my self worth at a very low mark.
It tells me I have to depend on someone else for my
income and then the only time I feel worthy is when I
drink to excess and party hearty so I can be
somebody. This is just one example of how our self
image is impacted negatively by what we see and hear
everyday in the movies, read in the news or see on the
tv.
Realize that this is the reason so many people in
today’s society feel underpowered and unable to see
themselves achieving a unique stature or acquiring
wealth.
Think about this and look around and see what other
examples you can find. If you find one that you think
is really huge then e-mail it to me at:
